Personal ID requirements when driving around

Anybody out there settle an argument?  I've never been 100% certain as to what I need to carry when driving in Spain in terms of personal identification.   I tend to have my original passport with me, but others say a copy of the relevant ID page will do .... and some say it has to be certified and others that it doesn't!  Or do you even need your passport if you have your (in my case UK) driving licence with you?  Any thoughts...or better still definitive answers!

best solution: make a photocopy, go to the Guardia Civil, and let them seal the copy of your passport and of your driving license.
They later can' t claim it's not reliable    :-)

And keep your original papers somewhere very safe.
What I do: a small bag around the waist (samsonite sell one for 7 or 8 euros, but sure you can find a chinese one cheaper) where I keep papers and ... money.

In a hire car I have a copy of the ID page from my passport laminated and reduced to credit card size, I also have a laminated copy of my driving licence.
I've been stopped twice whilst in my own car, one for a random road side check and once when I was involved in an accident
On both occasions they had a list of documents they wanted to see, they did not bat an eyelid when I gave them the copies

I had both passport and driving licence copied by the notary in Santa Pola and stamped by him as an official document. As I have a scooter these documents plus the insurance cover note are carried at all times.
For day to day use around the area I had a copy of the passport reduced to credit card size and laminated
