This photo taken about 12 years ago popped up on my Facebook feed today.
This chap used to come round once a month to sharpen your knifes, garden shears or whatever needed sharpening.
He had an old moped with a leather drive belt going to his grinding wheels, when he needed to start sharpening things he flicked the belt, with his fingers, onto a drive shaft he’d connected to the mopeds crankshaft, using a similar method to disengage it. HASAW!!
I haven’t seen him in years.
Another old lad used to come round once a month in a battered old Renault van, I don’t think it had seen an ITV station in years, he shouted “melones melones” at the top of his voice. He’d open the back doors and the van used to be full of melons at €1 each, a Spanish neighbours told me that they were the melons he sold were first rate.
So armed with this information when he next cane round I went and bought 2 melons from him and tended a €5 note.
He muttered something about mad Englishmen and the fact that he had no change and proceeded to give me another three melons as my change!!
Likewise, I haven’t seen him in years
Regards all
John
