Isn't it a Norwegian Blue? - lovely plumage
This is a Monk Parakeet (Myiopsitta monachus) also known as the Quaker Parrot. There is a fairly large population in Torrevieja but at the moment it seems to be content to stay in that area, I haven't heard of any reports of birds in the GA area. The Torrevieja population is dwarfed by the numbers in Barcelona where they are almost as common as pigeons, they also occur in large numbers in Madrid where they are now considered to be a pest. They are South American birds, and the entire population in Spain has grown through accidental or deliberate releases of caged birds - they are very popular as pets.I feel that my next article for the GA Advertiser might be writing itself as I speak....
