Flight via ams?
« on: April 17, 2016, 02:03. »
Hello all.
Has any one had flown to ALC via Amsterdam (AMS)?
Just trying to book flights now for Aug, coming up £275. but if going via AMS £130 (plus 2 hours more flight time)
But with a family of 6 that's a big saving (yes we are skint, my wife in retraining as a midwife so only one wage coming in!
How easy are transfers? Do you need to check in twice?  (its the same airline KML) Is it worth the hassle with young kids?

Not ALC but Cairo. Schipol is one massive terminal so you could have a long walk between gates. They are, or were ten years back, very efficient giving you the gate numbers for connecting flights for the next hour after arrival. I only did one check-in but was travelling with only cabin baggage. Not sure I'd want to do it with very young children though.

Philip ive also not done ALC but have used Schipol many times, it is a major hub in europe so huge in size. Many people travel in then fly in from the uk then fly to the US thus flying back over the UK because of the cost savings. I take little kids with me and treat it as part of the adventure
They dont like it up em !

Hi Philip, Ive used Schipol dozens of times for business and pleasure and its a great airport and very efficient.  Your cases will go straight through to ALC. Loads of shops and restaurants and all the departure gates are serviced by moving walkways.

If it's all with KLM, there should be no problem and even if there is an issue with the connection, it's up to KLM to sort it out. It is a big airport but all within one terminal so you won't get lost. You only check in once - in UK. You will probably go through passport control and another security check in Schipol. I've also flown through this airport lots of times over several years without problem.

Yes, went through Schipol en route from Belfast to Bologna a few years back, our flight from Belfast had to stack coming in and was about half an hour late landing as a result, the humans just about made the connection but the bags weren't so lucky. However, KLM put them on the next flight down and they arrived at our hotel within 24 hours.
