ATM fraud?

I hope not :-[
I bank with Santander, but this week I am car less, so today I walked up to Sabadell in Av Mediterrané.
The branch was closed, and both their ATMs were inoperational, so I used the one in front of the Öptico
store next door. I asked for 600€, withdrew my card, but no cash was issued.
Anyway, I rang the emergency no. on the machine. He told me to give it 24 hours before getting
in touch with my bank, which I thought strange. So I rang Santander Superlinea, that gave me a no.
which wasn't Santander to report the instance.
To keep a long story short, Santander seem to think it will be ok, they said maybe the transaction was not authorised
for being over the daily limit (which it isn't).
Any one else have similar issues in the past with local ATMs?

BTW, I read on the internet that transactions on ATMs with debit cards transfer
immediately. This true?

Funnily enough I had a similar thing with the very same card machine about 4 years ago . It appeared the transaction was complete and the cash was coming but then didn’t . I rang the bank and there was no problem apparently it was just a glitch I used another machine to check balance next day etc and the money wasn’t taken I must admit I’m getting very wary of these machines both in Spain and UK and tend to try to avoid drawing cash out now

I've read that if you make a purchase with a debit card the money leaves your bank immediately, I never make purchases with debit cards, more protection using a credit card, my in-laws had £500 stolen from their bank account after using their debit card to pay for goods, I don't know how though, the bank refunded the money fortunately. Using a debit card for purchases exposes your bank account I've always considered it a dodgy practice.

As a footnote, the money was not charged. But I'll think twice before using that ATM.
