Hi
Does anybody know ow much it costs to have a car in Spain?
I would buy a cheap car
With only liability insurance
What is the yearly tax for a car in Spain?
How often do you need to take the car to ITV?
What is the price for this?
Are there other expenses?
Could somebody give me an idea of how much this is yearly?
Cheers
Flemming :)

Hi,
The costs of owning a car can vary depending what size it is
Roughly -- Car tax 70 euros, Itv depends on how old it is Nothing for 4 years then 2 years then 1 yearly after 10 years Approx 30 euros Insurance I would definitely do fully comprehensive as the less complications you have after a bump the better approx 400 euros
I find it well worth it if you do many longish visits

Thanks for the quick answer 8)

Bought my car .18 months ago..it's only small Hyundai ..but it's definitely worth it.
Car hire is so hit and miss on prices now ...go to Frank Roscoe garage. He will sort everything for you..ongoing.

Based on a 1300 Fiesta 2006, costs per year in euros
Car Tax 65.00, Insurance 308.00, ITV 40.00, airport parking 260.00.
Not having to worry about car hire petrol policies - priceless!!

Not forgetting servicing and any repairs and depreciation.
Over the last twelve months 124 days of car hire have cost me €526 in hire charges, for a Focus sized car, c. €52 in insurance and about €90 in paying some bugger to fill the fuel up........it always goes back nearly empty of fuel, sometimes running on vapours!!......the benefits to me are no cash outlay and no worries about flat batteries, breakdowns, damage to the car etc etc.
Horses for courses, but for our fairly long off season visits hiring makes sense.

And don't forget the initial outlay cos they are expensive out here.

We pay approx. 1500 euros a year on car hire. Cars always new. Less than 20k mileage on them. Focus sized. If you bought a new one for say 15k it would take 10 years just to break even on purchase price alone and then you would be driving a car that's 10 years old which has little or no value.

Would be interested to learn of the car hire company, John Hannon, that gives such a low rate. Unfortunately we have to fly into Madrid and pick up a car there to drive down to GA. best rate we could get was Europcar from airport, but even that costs over 700 euros per month....we booked for 4 months and they are taking our money monthly! We are seriously considering buying a car to have here cos it is becoming very costly!

Here you go Sandra, I've just popped some dates into Records web site, 28 days booking in September for a Fiesta sized car €116, if you join the "club", which is free, you'd get 10% off that.
A few weeks ago the same booking may well have been €300 plus, the trick is to keep checking.....if the price is lower cancel and rebook.

Thanks, John.....have had a look and we will be booking for next year and thankfully we can fly into Barcelona and onto Alicante, so that we can get the car hire at ALC. great tips!

Sandra,
Appreciate it is too late now for this year, but a better way - if you have to fly via Madrid - is to take the Metro (or taxi) to Atocha station and treat yourself to a trip on the AVE to Alicante, then arrange for the hire car pickup at the RENFE station when you arrive.
If I understood your post correctly you are paying 2,800 euros to hire a car for 4 months, yes? Of course, you don't say what class of car it is (could be a large automatic) but it sounds horrendously expensive to me. Have a look at the Hire Cars in Spain website, I have always found them to come up with good deals.
Hope this helps for the future,
Michael.

Just to show the importance of rechecking your booking, the same car, same dates is now less than €90 for 28 days.
It's worth playing the game
