Confusion is going to reign, having said this I can't remember the last time a car hire company at Alicante airport asked for my paper license.

For the last umpteen years the only bit I've given them is the paper part.

Interesting for as long as I can remember I have only taken the card part with me and never had a problem . Even in USA
-
If you have a Spanish licence, there's no paper part anyway, and no way of confirming your points history.

Same as Spurs. None of the companies I have used over the last decade in Spain have ever asked to see the paper part - but I have been asked for it in the UK.
-
I've never shown my counterpart in Spain.

Having seen this story on the BBC i think it will go one of 2 ways, the spanish car hire industry will either disregard it and take no notice as is there usual stance with the law, or they will get all red pen and bureaucratic and it will be a major crisis that they can fix at the counter for a nominal fee.
