It has just been announced by the Mayor of Los Arenales that work will begin at the end of the month to finally demolish the eyesore............which is good news, but why do it at the start of the summer season? :P ::)

Spanish bureaucracy at its worst. The builder and local council fell out after renovation works started a few years ago and work was suspended. Something to do with them fining the builder for removing an extra wall or something. Now with the new hotel in GA perhaps they realise it will never be completed.

It could get a bit dusty in the square. Bars to avoid I imagine, but will give them a great view when it's done.
-
They should have let the developers build a new hotel, hope they sue the backside off the council.
-
Who needs a hotel directly in front of the sparkling azure ocean when you can build one directly in front of the N332! And with en-suite KFC bargain buckets!
-
Makes you wonder why build a hotel next to the N332 , probably be a glorified Travelodge.
-
I'm not a structural engineer but once that hotel had been stripped back the state of the rebar in the concrete columns made me think that demolition and rebuild was the best solution, but being on the beach side of the road a new build wouldn't be allowed so down it comes.

If I was a betting man I would anticipate that once the dust has literally settled that within the year a new development will rise from the ashes. There is no way in the reign of Sam that such a valuable piece of real estate will not be exploited, the little brown envelopes methinks are already being readied.

I reckon you are right Wilson, don't see why there can't be a hotel in situ, the old one was there from the sixties, we spoke to a British lady who lived in one of the beach side apartment blocks at Los Arenenales who'd actually had stayed in the old hotel when it was trading, said it was a good hotel, it's perverse to allow a developer to spend money and then stop the project.
-
As I understand it nothing can be built on that plot since it violates laws regarding proximity to the beach. Simple as that. I doubt very much if anyone could build there.
-
Well, I've heard about the hotel being demolished since I've been in GA, some 18 years, so took the news with a "pinch of salt" . But we couldn't believe our eyes when we were there last week, nearly gone!

Has the new bit on the left gone ?
