It seems failure to apply for residency is behind this.

I would guess reason number 1 would take care of a lot, hard to demonstrate regular income when it is all in the hip pocket!

I've got to say I did laugh reading that, to quote one of those voicing his concerns, "Yes I voted out, but I didn’t realise it would come to this" 😂🤣😂
Another one saying his "cash in hand jobs" didn't give him sufficient income for residency , but it's obviously been ok to defraud the Spanish system for years!!

Hi john
Yes I laughed at the 2 comments , I am surprised this has happened anyone who was already there had the opportunity to do it with no issues , but either didn’t bother or forgot .
I suspect this will not last though , Spain is desperate for money
-
The monthly income figure looks extremely high at least for a Southerner not on benefits.

I too was surprised at the amount of income you need, a lot of pensioners in the UK don't have that much money coming in, must say though that the listed conditions for residency aren't unreasoniable. I suspect that many thousands of Brits living in Spain with non residential status are in for a big shock.

Yes I consider myself quite well off but I think I might struggle to get to those figures with the very low current interest rates on savings etc. I actually own three houses outright but still think that figure might be a bit of a hurdle. It appears that you need an income and not just net assets including money in the bank.
Before our Northern friends react that was a wind up in my previous post.

Let’s not kid ourselves there was before Covid ten of thousands of brits living in Spain who were tourists who forgot to go home 20 years ago. Do people remember the advertising campaign done by the DWP with posters I saw in Torrevieja 10 years ago stating that 80 thousand brits on benefits were living on the Costas and had forgot to tell there local job centre about a change of address. Personally I say good riddance it’s about time it happened.

There’s some who have children who were educated in Spain & have local jobs , paying taxes etc but none have official residence because of inability to show income. Will those educated in Spain & employed be deported as well?
-
If you have a job and are paying taxes, why can't you show your income ?

For once I must agree with you. It should be a level playing field for all. Thousands of Brits have worked the system both in Spain and here in the UK. Live here or in Spain then they must work and contribute to the system or keep yourself. Yes there must be a safety net to help those in genuine need of help but it is abused. There are many families that struggle with the difficult decision of feeding their kids or upgrading their iPhone!

Thinking about it, not being able to show income must mean people are working cash in hand , probably not paying taxes as well, what other possible reason is there for not being able to show income.

It is the same here with the Government help during the pandemic. Many have missed out because they did not declare their income during previous years. Cash in hand businesses.
My view is if you do not contribute into the system then don't expect anything out of it.
It is at the end of the day very unfair competition when honest traders are undercut by cowboys. Like the Licenced taxis vs the private without insurance etc doing the run for cash in hand.
-
Yes, if you don't abide by the rules and fiddle you can't complain.
-
If you have a job and are paying taxes, why can't you show your income ?
Not earning enough, apparently if you can show €20000 in bank you can stay but if you’re only earning 2000€ pm you’re unlikely to have 20k euros
-
So it seems you can show your income but it's just not enough.

A lot of retired people could show 20,000 in the bank but would not have an income of 2,000 each month.

Worth posting to add nothing else than my agreement with the majority. Spain won't mourn the loss of this lot using an EHIC card for healthcare for twenty years... and some of them complaining about the "spongers" and immigrants in the UK of course! Good riddance.
-
Not sure I see the issue here everyone knew that you had to apply and if you were already there and had been for a while it was almost automatic you didn’t need to prove income or anything. They had 15 months to apply so I can only assume those that didn’t either didn’t want , forgot or had something to hide
-
The downside is that it is going to bump up the DSS bill which WE are paying!
-
I've no sympathy either.

.....and I wonder if these folk do get the "boot" will we see less cars on English number plates running around GA?
There are a few that I know have been there for a several years, I did check one, it's MOT history on the DVLA website showed that it had been well over 2 years since it's last MOT...
I would therefore assume that any insurance, if indeed it had any, would be worthless...

Well we did our photos and fingerprints yesterday which was the final part of the application.
The new TIE cards will be available for collection in ten weeks time, which is relatively quick for here really 😃
-
I wonder what would happen if you took a photo and reported the car to the DVLA as untaxed and un-MOTed via their website? I'm guessing it only applies in the UK.
