Hello all
It's probably well known, but I have only just worked it out. To save a couple of quid on car hire, ( around 2 hundred in our case, 7 seater), it cheaper to hire a car from Alicante its self and not the airport. Also thinking about it, it will be better to just jump in a taxi, straight to your villa, without having to wait for your car, check it over etc after a long morning with cases and kids in tow etc. Then just get a bus into Alicante the next day at your leisure to pick up car.
-
Were currently in dispute with Goldcar over a recent rental, the usual late night arrival, kids all tired etc. The wife had booked via do you spain months ago a full/full pay at counter. As the driver i paid the lovely man and we went to car park, the vehicle had seen better days with 14 dents and scratches already marked on sheet with 3 other damages listed ie wing mirror, wheels etc. We duly inspected a black car at 10pm in the dimly lit multi storey, eventually ticking off the damage and
not finding anymore. The next day i looked at the rental agreement and noticed that we were being charged 2.50 a day diesel supplement despite not wanting or requesting one and a further 12.50 for smart return again which wasnt requestedi , i had also paid in pounds thus being charged extra fees despite choosing euros, then i remembered how the smiling assassin had glitched the pin machine so getting me to repeat the payment this time without the option.
As per the rules i have requested a full refund of the overcharges, i dont hold out much hope so will then dispute with visa. Having rented dozens of cars my head spins with the constant fraudulent activities that car rentals in Spain are allowed to get away with despite pressure from the EU to clean up its act.
-
Well this was my thinking, the great thing about GA is you don't need a car to get there. And as we don't really need a car straight away, why do we need the stress of the airport hustle and bustle? We are happy enough just to chill in the villa for the first couple of days anyway. So also saving on rental days. Then once you are chilled out, you can take your time looking over the car etc. However the main point was it was a lot cheaper 🙂. The other points are all a bonus.

This is very interesting Philip. I’ll do a comparison this week. Thanks

I think car rental is an occupation similar to bankers, estate agents, double glazing, used car sales, where fleecing the customer seems part of the experience. I recall 25 years ago flying into orlando on a virgin fly drive and going to dollar car rental where i was upsold every add on in existence after being given the scare stories of million dollar expenses. my brother an Australian booked a rental via an aussie firm when flying into heathrow recently, on collection the same nonsense was given, insurance is no good, upgrade this, excess waiver that, the same baloney you get at ALC. They are a scourge on society.

I tick all the boxes, priority queue, fully inclusive insurance, pick it up full and get a refund on any fuel left in the tank and I end up paying circa €360 for three weeks hire....in all honesty I think it’s a pretty fair deal and gives you a relaxing stress free break.
Always used Record, I’ve always had an email confirming the refund on unused fuel by the time the flight home has landed, I know some people have had issues with them, they’ve always looked after me and for the last four or five years I don’t think I’ve had a car off them with more than 1000 Kms on the clock.
I did spend a few years with insurance4hirecar, or something similar to self insure, but I never felt relaxed.
Like anything else in life you pays your money and takes your choice.

Record all day long for me. Over the last 12 years never had a problem, I take the fully inclusive insurance package that includes priority queue, and from clearing passport control to leaving airport 15/20 minutes max. No worries.

As the recent Ryanair thread where i said you get what you pay for, as a customer you have to stick to the company's rules and pay the penalty if yoy dont. We paid €32 euros over xmas for 11 days rental, a ridiculously pitiful amount, but on paying this i expect both parties to adhere to the rules of which there are many. My annoyance is the rental companies attempt at any opportunity to be dishonest, i appreciate they haven't made any money from me but thats there problem.
-
Phillip, with Record if you join their club you accumulate points on your rentals, it results in a 10% discount on your basic rental price going forward.
You also need to play the game....book the vehicle you want, but don’t pay a cent, just reserve it, Record will confirm the booking.
Then keep on checking the price, you’ll be surprised how much it fluctuates by, if it’s cheaper than your original booking simply book the vehicle and cancel the previous booking. I’ve saved a fortune since I started doing that, I’ve even cancelled them and rebooked whist sat in the airport in the UK.
Hope this helps with reducing your costs.

Thanks John
I was actually just telling the Mrs about this strategy of booking then cancelling as, I remember you mentioning it before. We will give it a go. A seven seater from a decent" hire company at the airport, for two weeks in Aug was coming out a £600. There was cheaper ones but a google search came up with awful reviews....click rent....no chance!
So then enterprise came up from the train station at £400. And Alamo? At £350 but I have not looked into Alamo yet...has anyone used them?

I had a Ford Fiesta unlimited mileage for 5 days with Record Go just after the new year (cycled down to airport to collect it on the 2nd Jan) cost me €1.25 full-full. Had my fuel refunded and no issue on return of the car. To be fair the people in the car park you return it to don’t know what you’ve paid for it so I didn’t get the impression they were looking for damage that wasn’t there. I always request an older car anyway. A pleasant young English lad works on desk for them as well. I would always go with Record
-
Did I read that right...€1.25...! You could not get the bus for that... :)

See attachment:)

Wow that's crazy! I wonder what the thinking is behind letting these cars go so cheap at times! I read a article by Simon Calder, saying we can't moan about the flights going up in the school holiday because that's the time the airlines make money, there probably losing the rest of the year.
-
I reckon they are hoping for customers like me Philip, paying an extortionate rate for full cover and priority queue.
I also suppose this good experience will hopefully, in their opinion, go towards securing future bookings.
Long may it continue

Did they ask for credit card and 1400 euro deposit?
Do you have own insurance?
-
Just booked 8 days for Feb half term, focus type car full/full fuel with Record for 6 euros. On collection will have to leave a €1400 credit card deposit, and pay around 80 euros for the fuel. I have a annual insurance policy that covers car hire excess not to be confused with car insurance that the rental company will try and sell. If you cause any damage they will take from your 1400 a set amount as detailed in t&cs, up to the limit. You then claim on your excess insurance to recover the credit card charges. The fuel payment is also refunded. The negatives to all this are you need your wits about you as the rental company will spank you at every opportunity. On our last rental at xmas the vehicle had 14 recorded dents and scratches and 3 other damages listed, try checking a black car at 10pm in a dimly lit multi storey, with the caveat by rental company that once you leave any unlisted damage belongs to you.

I thought it was 1100 euro. Got my own excess insurance. I always wash and vac the car before I return it and treat it like it my own.
-
Ive not researched it in any depth but last deposit was 1400 and the next booking in feb is as well, do check your excess insurance because my last policy was 1100 limit. I always give the car a wash and vacuum even got the glue out twice with a dodgy parcel shelf. Whilst no guarantee of a problem free return i always think if the guy sees that the car's been looked after he's less likely to look too hard.

Just checked documents and tried book for March. It is €1,100 deposit. I think Firefly is €900.
I once parked the car up in Santa Pola and some ply sheets that were stacked up fell on the bonnet as I was reversing out. I stupidly carried on and they scratched the bonnet quite badly. I polished them out best I could and expected to get charged - but never did. That was record go.
-
Just checked documents Goldcar was €1400 image attached and next booking with Record is also €1400, i tend to use Doyou Spain so maybe thats ththere particular conditions with the rental company. Either way it pays to read the conditions so you know what to expect on collection assume nothing.
-
Think have just booked cheapest ever?
€0.16 for 3 days in Feb for a Fiesta with Goldcar. Recordgo was €0.85 same so I booked both! Whichever que is shorter I will use haha

No problem at all with my record go car for 85 cents sat until today. Returned it no problems
-
Very interesting Times article, in my case i am currently in dispute with Goldcar regarding charges they added without my knowledge or permission. One related to a diesel surcharge despite me not asking or requesting a diesel vehicle. The second being despite us always being full/full i was changed at collection to flexifuel both items written in spanish and hidden within the contract. After my complaint Goldcar have launched a thorough investigation with the sales guy at ALC over the dubious fees. The conclusion surprise surprise was that i requested both items from the smiling assassin at Goldcar sales. As a company they are lower than flotsam. Further i also complained to Do You Spain who have been as much help as a chocolate teapot. The only positive is im now doing a chargeback over the payment taken.

September I had a small car from one of the on airport car hire companies, just under £150 for three and a half weeks. I have my own annual car excess policy which I have previously made one claim on, they paid out no problem.
-
Well all was good with my hire with inter rent. Car was quite scratched when i got it but was decent enough inside. No issues, got them to check it in carpark when we left and the money held against my card was removed after 3 days. Quite a bargain

Also just returned our car after 2 weeks rental costing under 2 euro a day with Centauro. Can only emphasise that you need your wits about you at all times. Firstly centauro counter lady tried to discreetly down group me from a C to a B group then when paying for rental, fuel etc she inadvertently added 89 euros for insurance which you first see on the chip/pin machine, quickly taken back off, then scare story about breakdown recovery blah blah. Then onto collection of vehicle the vehicle had 12 areas of damage listed on contracf,so then a methodical panel by panel check, we found 2 damages,1 missing aerial and a kerbed alloy all 4 would be chargeable under the rental. Over to the office where disinterested guy got his torch out and agreed the damage and duly updated via his tablet, i asked if vehicle had been inspected prior to which he shrugged. All then went well, upon return the car was well inspected by lady with torch who spent a good 5 minutes checking off all the damage so clearly an emphasis on finding something to charge for in my opinion.
-
Had similar with firefly last month went to get car it had 20 panels of damage went over to office to point out 2 not on form guy couldn’t care less he said it had now been updated on return girl from office without looking at the form I had spotted from 20 yards away damage not on form not sure how she knew this as she hadn’t looked at form yet I had to put my phone light on up close to see it I was charged €180 I complained on return home got nowhere so I took it to the governing association and I won got it refunded I completed the online form and asked very pointed questions like has anyone else been charged for damage on this panel and if so have they had jt repaired don’t be scared to push it and never give up
-
Spurs totally agree, we once took car back to Drivalia, young girl in office came out with torch and with poor acting skills gave whole car inspection in 3 seconds then homed in on a scratch on alloy wheel, not on the rim but towards the centre, we had to get on our knees to see it, Sorry she says that will be 100 euros to repair. Im convinced on arrival they check they're paperwork quickly before finding the non recorded damage, it was a total scam. We had to pay because being off airport no pay no lift to terminal, on return to uk contacted credit card provider and disputed payment, duly got a refund. Fraudulent company in my opinion.

Just booked a 7 seater at Easter with Firefly... it’s always a bit stressful but so much cheaper so I take the risk , bit like Flying with Ryanair
-
When you’re getting cars that cheap why not just pay the fully comprehensive insurance for a stress free relaxing break?
Last thing I want to be doing is checking cars over on pickup with a torch for damage, I just want to get to my destination.
When I’m away I don’t want to be thinking where I park the car in the supermarket car park in case someone dings it with a trolley.
At the end of the break I just want to return the car, chuck ‘em the keys and go and board my flight without having to endure a forensic check of the car and my patience.
I know we all have different priorities.
I will add that in 14 years of booking direct with Record I have had non of the “aggravation” I read of in these posts.
I did once refuse a car they tried to palm me off with and it was resolved in the space of fifteen minutes, that was many years ago.
Regards all, hope you have a hassle free day, I will

personally i have had no hassle just some minor stress in 15 years of hiring but i know i run the risk !
I guess if i do have a bad experience i may change my thought process when hiring
-
I must be another of the lucky ones as I've gone 16 years with only one hiccup; a non refund of a refuel charge that I got back anyway after a lot of emails. I haven't hired though in Alicante since late 2015 so perhaps it's got worse. You always had to be vigilant but now it seems that sometimes even that's not enough.
I have just hired a car in Iceland and put my Spanish experiences to the fore when collecting the car and managed to add on about 10 damages that the "inspector" missed. There were three of us going over the car so the attendant was a bit outnumbered. Returning was done however with minimal checks. They block €2100 on the credit card so that concentrates your mind somewhat.

A bit of perspective is required, over 17 years and 6 to 8 visits per year we must have hired well over 100 cars. Of these most issues have been in the last few years. The tinterweb is littered with similar reviews regarding Alicante car hire companies and theyre questionable practices.
Its not about priorities as suggested or being tight, for me its about honesty and integrity, i book and pay for a rental and sign to abide to the terms of the agreement, i look after the vehicle and aim to return it as given,if i break it i expect to pay for it. Sadly the rental companies at times have no such scruples and should they choose they will try and shaft you.
I also appreciate i could buy theyre very expensive insurance to avoid the hassle, but choose not to preferring instead to spend all that money in the local GA economy.
