I see Mr O"Leary aka Ryanair is at it again , going to start charging for hand luggage , not to make more money ( God forbid!!) but to speed up boarding , lying ba•••rd !!
-
Anything which stops people waiting to board queuing while others faff around putting their stuff in the lockers, blocking the boarding isle is ok by me. :)
-
Gone from my first choice down to no choice now will only use now if no other options this last 3 years has been a nightmare

Unfortunately it looks like there will still be lots of people fafffing around with bags in the aisles, but they will have had to pay £6-10 for the privilege.
I'm looking at 20L bags and load carrying vests as an alternative .
Ryanair are going to lose customers over this as for a couple on a return trip it could add £40 to the trip.

He should go back to the old days no seat allocation pick a seat and sit in it loading the plane in that way was so much quicker . O’Leary was the one who started all the hand luggage issues he wanted no one to have a case then when he achieved it he changed his mind and wanted to charge for that instead
Grubby little airline always looking to part you with your cash used to be a regular 10 times a year now it’s only if no other viable options available
-
Removing the bags from the passengers in the non-priority queue was always bound to fail. It only added time and cost to the Ryanair operation (they have to pay the baggage handlers extra for the extra bags going in the hold) - so I guessed they were going to try something new.
Just experimented and tried to do a booking on their website post Nov 1st when the new policy comes in - but if you book before 1st Sept the option to drop your 10kg bag off at check in isnt there yet and will be charged retrospectively (or you can cancel your flight) charming !
Priority boarding (and hence bringing your bag on the plane) will be limited to the first 95 passengers who apply - then the priority boarding option wont be available for any given flight
If you want to keep your costs right down and can get your stuff into a 40x20x25 flight bag you will still be OK with that in your hand in the non priority queue
-
Must admit drives me nuts the way people FAFF about putting bags in the overhead lockers, someone will put it in and then the wife will say can I have my cardigan, meanwhile twenty people are waiting to get past, even seen people put small suit cases length ways across the locker, how stupid is that, perhaps everything should go in the hold.
-
You can never legislate for idiots.
-
Look at the positives in this, when your flight is cancelled you don’t have as much to carry home #customercareryanairstyle

if you want to avoid all charges dont book your seats in advance, dont book prioity, bring a strong carrier bag 35x20x20 with your sandwiches, laptop and reading items. As most of us are householders in G.A all our clothes etc are all in the house. I took cabin baggage cases last trip,, carting them up & downstairs (no lift) @ m/cr airport, then waiting at carocel at alicante, or standing in the queue @ boarding gate to get on plane early to find a vacant locker, now i just sit at the check in desk till the last few are in the queue & proceed to my allocated seat

Totally agree with the four posting above.

I think you are always going to get the "faffing" jackets, cardigans, duty free etc,etc regardless ,it seems to me they are trying to get everyone to use checked in bags ,what annoys me as much is as soon as the seatbelt light goes off they leap up drag their stuff from overhead lockers and slump over the top of you checking those all important messages on their mobiles , why? where are they going ,there are no steps to get down unless they are going to abseil down to the tarmac because they "must " be first back into the terminal building ,drives me nuts !!
-
Ok my understanding - if you pay for priority boarding £6 you can take a small suitcase as well as a 'handbag type thing' on board but the suitcase is now smaller than the current allowed size. If you pay £8 you can put as big a suitcase in the hold as you like as long as it doesn't weigh more than 10kg. Or you just pay nothing for a small 'handbag' under the seat.
-
That’s about it except for 2 issues no1 priority boarding does not mean you get to sit together there’s another charge for that and no2 only 95 people can get the £6 priority so take a case on board .
To say nothing about a plane where over half the people are priority boarders how is that a priority? Just another cash raising idea by a very poor management
-
Does paying for your seat mean ‘priority boarding’? We’ve paid for seats for a flight in January. Dont usually use Ryanair. Do I get to put my under 10kg case on? We wont be having the extra smaller bag.

No, they're two different things, no 10kg bag on board unless you pay for priority boarding

Compare lidl.es and lidl.de and you can find the difference regarding shopping. Then you go to ryanair website and try to find out if it's worth travelling to Spain.
It is! But more for anything but money!

thanka John H for the link that explains all info re ryanair baggage. I may be in the minority but this great news for me. I will now be able to take me 10kilo cabin bag containg lliquids etc, to the check in desk for a pre booked €8. No carting it though security having it opened for checking, no more clear plastic resealable bags with 100 mil of liquid, no more hunting for a locker or having it taken off you to go in the hold. Thanks ryanair

Ian - I would be with you on that Ian if it wasnt for the shambles that is Swissport at Birmingham Airport. It just takes too long (well over 30 mins - sometimes much more) to come round in the baggage collection area.
Alicante is pretty good in my experience not having to wait too long
-
I'm with Beachlife. Just paid for priority boarding on the return to BHX so I don't have to wait for my case. Cost neutral for me, just won't have a coffee on board.
-
Back in the old ryan air days we wouldn't mind buying drinks even occasionally something hot to eat, but now its a mercadona packed lunch after beer or coffee in departures. We do priority because it makes life a lot smoother jumping the various hoops. That said ryanair nearly always come out considerably cheaper than others.
-
We used to fly with airberlin ten years ago. But now ryanair is the only company offering direct flights form Frankfurt, Cologne, Karlsruhe. So why take a flight by lufthansa or airberlin, stopover in Mallorca maybe, 6 hours, not sure about luggage.
So I will opt for ryanair and hope they will offer service from Germany to Alicante for the years to come. I once flew with lufthansa in 1999, a small plane, I felt a bit sick and was offered a brandy ... But this seems far away from the present situation. On a flight from Britain or Germany you don't necessarily need some catering. You can bring your sandwich, you can buy a coffee or beer (not cheap, but what's the price in a restaurant?)
It's the question, stay at home or have some expenses when on holiday or travelling to and fro. And, as aready mentioned here, I rather pay some money for my handbag suitcase to have it stored in the luggage compartment than heaving it over the stairs in the airport.

Gosh a charm offensive from Ryanair.
I flew back to BHX last night and you now have to go through passport control in the middle of the Alicante airport departure lounge, there are both automatic recognition and passport booths. Obviously just started as there were plenty of helpful staff guiding you through. Then you do the whole thing again (as always) when you landed in Birmingham

Updated information on hand luggage:
https://www.ryanair.com/ie/en/useful-info/help-centre/faq-overview/Baggage/new-bag-policy-effective-01st-november
So far only in English, but I imagine this is valid for Alicante Airport as well. My questions:
- I must check in the wheel baggie 10 kg for 8 Euros at the baggage counter, so one to two hours before start?
- I can pack this suitcase with fluids as much as I like? (Milk, buttermilk, yoghurt, shampoo, etc. - Somehow important for me on arrival late in the evening, I need something the like for breakfast.) So it's really comparable to checked-in luggage, just cheaper and only 10 kgs?
In the German version of my booking (I will travel to Arenales in november) it says: second item (the wheel baggie) will not pass security. But no mention of baggage counter.
Perhaps I'm too cautious, by 6 november there may be more information.
Best wishes,
Monika

Subject: Important Information Regarding Your Ryanair Flight
Dear Customer,
Your flight to Spain – Booking reference ******
In order to prioritize the comfort and safety of all passengers, Ryanair will implement the following restrictions on your upcoming flight to Spain:
• Customers will not be allowed to carry alcohol on board and all cabin baggage will be searched at the boarding gates.
• Any alcohol purchased in airport shops or elsewhere must be packed carefully in a suitable item of cabin baggage, which will be tagged at the gate and then placed in the aircraft hold free of charge.
• If the bag is unsuitable for placing in the hold (e.g. plastic bag) then customers will be required to dispose of the alcohol in the bins provided.
• Boarding gates will be carefully monitored and customers showing any signs of anti-social behaviour or attempting to conceal alcohol will be denied travel without refund or compensation.
Thank you in advance for your co-operation with these procedures which we hope will allow you to enjoy your flight with us.
Yours sincerely,
Ryanair Customer Services

Wow! For real DaveG? This does not as yet appear to be on their website.
If so, I totally agree with it and echo the comment "about time too". Hopefully, other airlines will follow suit.
-
Lots of people will go elsewhere to avoid the hassle, they will probably be charging €10 for a coffee.

Hi Aficionado,
I thought it was a joke at first but it was mailed to my daughter on the 3rd in relation to her flight to Alicante today - it was mailed to her direct and had her booking reference and other flight details etc attached. I took those personal details out of the post.
When she arrives I'll check that the planned searches were actually carried out.
Regards
Dave

Cheers Dave, it will be interesting to hear her feedback.
Found this in the Mirror online dated 18th June.
Ryanair has already taken a number of measures to prevent disruptive behaviour on its flights, and customers are not permitted to consume their own duty-free purchases on board.
"Customers flying from Glasgow Prestwick and Manchester to Alicante and on all UK flights to Ibiza are no longer permitted to bring duty free alcohol on board the aircraft, and those who have purchased duty free alcohol will be asked to put it into the hold or leave their purchases behind.”
So looks like it is selective at present and not a global policy.
Michael.

we flew back a couple of weeks ago to Newcastle with Easyjet and alcohol on board was limited to 2 drinks each - was announced before they started bringing trolley out - some people moaned but nothing serious
-
We book our seats so me and the wife sit together, don't bother with priority boarding as it just means you sit on the plane longer.
-
Afternoon Michael,
My daughters flight was from Manchester and the email definitely originated from Ryanair; there were too many details in it that only they would know. However none of the aforementioned checks were undertaken so perhaps it is a shot across the bows to passengers flying from the airports you mention in the hope that said passengers will heed the warning and therefore make the checks unnecessary whilst maintaining the threat of sanctions.
A worse problem was the increased traffic chaos at Manchester airport since the introduction of drop off charges ostensibly to alleviate traffic problems. Twenty minutes to reach the car parks from the end of the motorway (a distance you could walk in ten minutes) doesn't sound like a sensible solution to a problem that didn't exist in the first place.

Hi Dave,
Thanks for the update, yes it does look as though it was more of a "watch out" type of warning, maybe staff were just told to be alert to the issue but not to do anything unless drunken behaviour was noticed, who knows.
This business of charging for drop off in the name of easing traffic congestion is of course nothing more than a money raising operation, the same has been done at Belfast International where you are forced to go through a £1 drop off zone or else go into one of the carparks, makes no difference to traffic flow and if anything slows it down as there are barriers to the zone but fairly rakes it in for the airport. At Belfast City there is a better, much more user friendly approach whereby cars can no longer get access to the front of the terminal building and must go through a drop off zone but at least this is free for 10 minutes which is more than enough to unload your passengers, goodbye hugs etc. It is a short walk to the the doors of the terminal so all in all an acceptable way of doing things. Not been through City for a while so hopefully what I say still holds true.
Michael.

BHX - £2 for a 10 minute drop off or free for 30 minutes if you can handle a 10 minute walk/bus ride. Alternatively you can pick up and drop off free for 20 minutes at Birmingham International station and then take the monorail to the airport. It's a good place to pick up as I've never seen any traffic wardens patrolling at the station.
-
Hi Michael,
Customers flying from Glasgow Prestwick and Manchester to Alicante and on all UK flights to Ibiza are no longer permitted to bring duty free alcohol on board the aircraft, and those who have purchased duty free alcohol will be asked to put it into the hold or leave their purchases behind.
”Regional profiling - I thought it was illegal!!!
See link to get the views of the local judiciary.
https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-manchester-45599295
The price for a 5 minute drop off is £3 but the traffic is that bad that by the time cars reach the exit barrier they have exceeded their time and cannot exit requiring a further payment; this dominoes backwards causing mayhem.
As you say a money making racket and in this case has transformed a fairly well organised delivery and collection into nothing short of third world chaos. Not a good advert for an ambitious regional airport.
