Hi all.
Does anyone know if Darbys is still open and still owned by the same owners? Many thanks
-
Yes, still open (but not on Mondays) and with same owners. Still my favourite chippy!

Still my favourite chippy!
In fairness isn't it also the ONLY chippy this side of Benidorm?
-
Sorry, has Aquarius closed?

Has anyone in this thread been to Ray's in Benidorm - The ORIGINAL one in the old town. I think they are absolutely superb, and would love to hear a comparison between them and Derby's. Because if I have a local chippy that is in the same league, I'll head over there tomorrow.
Frankly, and somewhat worryingly, I've ignored them solely (no pun intended) on the fact that they are in GA :(

Whilst we love and embrace Spanish cuisine in all its forms, we also like Darbys. In my 50 or so years ive tried many a chippy in the uk and have to say Darbys is pretty good. Its reasonably priced good quality takeaway food. A slice of Britain plonked in the corner of Masa square. And before the armchair activists respond Mr Darby does not offer me extra chips to promote his business. Ps his curry sauce is also scrummy.

For us ...we cannot beat Aquarius.........the fish and chips are legionary.....and other dishes for non fish lovers...something for everyone

We love Aquarius too....but I haven't tried Darby's yet.
We will one day though!

The biggest issue I have with Aquarius is if you order a burger and chips, you get a measly few chips.
You are encouraged to order an extra portion, which I did.
The chips and the extra portion are still less than you get elsewhere as a single portion.
Next time around, I ordered a burger & chips with the extra portion and when they arrived, they were all on the same plate and still wouldnt fill the plate.
I haven't visited there much since then.....

Aquarius for us, homemade chips and crispy batter on the skinless and boneless cod, tried Darby's once, never again.

What you all haven't said (but are probably thinking) is the warm welcome you receive from John and Maureen NOT.PMSL

They always seem to be under pressure dont they. Thought they were retiring?

Tried Darbys and the Aquarius once, enough said!!

I think whitby and GA is an unfair comparison, having sampled whitbys finest on many occasion nothing else comes close.

We are lucky having it on our doorstep Victor, it does set the standard

Whitby is lovely - but dropped in one Sunday on the way back from a family visit and timed it with the Gothic weekend - hard to sit and eat the finest catch surrounded by a Victorian styled family of undertakers

My last couple of chips...sorry trips... to Ray's. If anyone can tell me Darby's compares I will be over there tomorrow.
