La Palleta
-
We've always been a fan of lapalletta but whilst over for the easter holidays we ate there and weren't impressed, we booked a table 2 weeks earlier whilst passing and requested a certain table in the restaurant, not an issue as no other table in reservation book so all duly noted, on arrival at our allotted time we were shown to the table by the toilets, i duly stated our table request pointing at the vacant table we had requested, the answer was someone else has reserved it, not possible says me as when we reserved no one else in book, we then had a take or leave it moment and duly gave in.The guests for our reserved table then arrived and were greeted like returning royalty with hugs and kisses all round. Clearly we had been trumped. The waitress then made matters worse by seeing my annoyance said next time if i made the same request they would honour it. The evening then declined further with the wifes chicken in cheese dish being undercooked and bloody inside, it was then zapped in the microwave which didnt rectify the issue really. All in a poor show.
-
If you go to La Palleta make sure you go to the bank and get a mortgage first not cheap? Actual very expensive for what you get.
-
You are right they're not cheap but have achieved a top slot in GA simply because they are the best of of a bad lot, there's lots of good eateries in ga but none really that are exceptional, ironically the only eaterie that compares well is darbys chippy, the indian restaurants arent a patch on the thousands in the uk which beat them hands down for quality. We went to good view the other week after hearing rave reviews, at best it was average and thats being generous. The only stars in ga for me are nankin or gran mundo if you prefer Chinese, there isnt an indian as theyre all pretty poor, patagonia for steaks and chicken, and 2 new entries which rated highly were Rogers all day breakfast and Maykas kitchen which was very good, other than these travel elsewhere as both santapola and alicante city have shed loads of top eateries that put ga to shame.
All the above is my opinion i say it how i eat it.
-
I dont think La Palletta is overly expensive tbh unless u go for the 3 courses and loads of wine and i disagree that its the best of a bad lot. Think thats a bit 'unkind'. I also like Alexandria's - worth a visit. Do agree about the indians tho and also agree that Gran Mundo is best chinese.

I can't believe no one has mentioned Dunbars!
-
Gran Mundo, Cocoa and Il Sapore
-
Joking aside (see above) Cocoa has gone downhill for ten years in my opinion. The last time I went it was simply a different place - they've even altered the chips seasoning. Why would you do that? I suppose nearly all the original staff have left now :( The steak was always pitiful, but the pizzas and chips (classic combo haha) used to be good.
-
Dont panic gavetran Dunbars the custòmer from last july will post soon saying how its the best restaurant in spain blah blah, sadly the empty tables suggest something different.
Forgot to mention the Belfry we met friends on a Sunday for a carvery the other day and have to say it was pretty good 3 courses and at reasonable cost, the team who run it again are pretty good and always aim to please.
-
Did Nan King other night and it didn't disappoint, excellent value tasty Chinese. I rate Alexanders highly as well, good home cooked mousaka at very reasonable price, drinks good value and staff very friendly.
-
My all-time favourite is Kings Foods: http://www.kings-food.com/products.asp wherever I see their van I know I'm going to get a wholesome tourist-class microzapped meal! "Molded to give the look of a handmade product" says the write-up, my mouth is watering!

Good View, Get Fresh

Get fresh always great food.
-
Thank you for all your replies, didn't really want to go to The Paletta, we tried to reserve there for Valentine's night but after phoning for ages with nobody replying we went there and asked firstly why does'nt anyone answer the phone and secondly could we reserve a table. We were told they never answered the phone as they were too busy working and then they said we could only reserve a table at 6.30 but had to be out by 8.00 ! Well that put us off completely ! We finally went to The Piedra, glad we did, it was excellent, good food, evening menu for 13.95 and a bottle of excellent house wine for 7 euros. Can definately recommend.
-
Get fresh always great food.
Was there at Christmas, never been since and have no intention of returning, what a disappointment!
-
La piedra is one of our favourites. Fab service, good food and reasonably priced. Plus they are amazing with our autistic son, which means we get to enjoy a meal.

La Piedra is good food but the evening is spoiled by the noisy racket emanating from the bar.

Tres Besos never fails to deliver either. Am surprised at the negative La Palletta comments but just goes to show how different peoples experiences can be.

Loved La Piedra for breakfast. Loved La Palletta too....but our favourites so far are Alexandria and the Indian restaurant right next to it.
We'll be back there in a few weeks.
Can't wait!
Cheers
Davy !!!
-
One thing it does show is how impossible a task it is to please everyone . Great reviews from some including me for a restaurant and slated by someone else . And yes I do rate Dunbars we've had a few great nights there. I guess the best bit is we really do have a huge choice of different restaurants and bars. Most of which I have tried over the years and I can honestly say there are not any I wouldn't go back to
-
Here's my input. La Piedra OK but a bit bland, and very clicky as we got the table by the toilets as well. Gran Mundo again OK but Marisotas kitchen is much better food although the staff at Mundos are nicer. Tres Besos, nice but pricey, much prefer the Chicken Satay at Hazidikee which has the best sauce ever.
Get Fresh, very nice food which is well cooked but a little slow. As for Sunday dinners Belfrey and Molly Malones are nice and so is Brothers. As for the Indian restaurants Gourmet is the best of the 3 I've been in. To be fair the selection of food we have in GA is varied and on the whole good quality and cheap. If you don't like it stay at home with a ding meal.

I intend to try Mayka's Kitchen (spelling?) very soon, in the sincere hope that it changes my opinion which is that the only decent food in the area is in Santa Pola and Alicante.
-
El Olivo is excellent.
Shame that Matola doesn't seem to be re-opening this season.
-
Where is Mayka's kitchen please ?

Upstairs at the Shirley Bassey strip.
They do a roast leg of lamb on Sunday, it's superb, four of us shared one and had plenty
The Galician Octopus is a great starter.
Definitely worth a visit.
The owner/chef is a lovely lady and enjoys talking about her food and it's ingredients

Have you tried Fusion the Lebanese restaurant in Altomar ll,the lamb is excellent!👍🍽
-
Gemstone you have experienced the same as others at La palleta, ive lost count of the dozens of times ive rung to make a reservation at different times of day and no one ever answers, i once got the same answer as were too busy to answer the number that we use in all our advertising to make a reservation on. The problem is Lapalleta have become complacent in that they know theyre number 1 and now treat customers with a take or leave it approach, in my mind a risky business strategy because as many forum members will recall restaurants have highs followed by lows and the day may come when the la palleta staff look forlornly out of the window and are desperate to answer the phone no longer rings.
-
Yes Victor I totally agree, but its such a shame.
-
Thanks for the reply John, will try the Mayka's kitchen next time.

Think one of the best places I've ever eaten in GA was on my balcony, bbq with some roasted med veg and a good bottle of wine watching the sun go down over the sierra de crevillente. Love it 8)
-
Can't agree more. Watching the sun set over the med from our balcony. It has never ceased to be amazing in the 30+ years I have been coming here.

I often watch the sun rise over the Mediterranean when in GA, but I've never seen it set over the Mediterranean....

Thats a thought then, where would you be sat to see the sunset over the Mediterranean sea. The balearics maybe.

It depends on the quantity of wine consumed I suppose!

Hello Gemstone,
Sorry for your experience, we would like to clear up a few things; maybe you tried calling at a time when we were closed, as we always answer the phone when we are here and when we can. Unfortunately there are certain times when we are busy with the service and are unable to answer the phone. In our opinion we are at a no win situation, i.e. if we don't give our full attention to the seated customers, and we answer the phone at the busiest times, our customers would not be happy as they wouldn't receive the service that we do proudly give, and we would find ourselves in the situation where we read online on forums such as this one, that we aren't giving a correct service and always on the phone.
Regarding Valentines night; we are only a small restuarant, with only 10 tables, we publicise well in advance, and unfortunately it's a first come first served basis, we tried to give you an option, and we understand that that time didn't suit you, but for some people it does.
Kind regards,
La Paletta
-
Hello Victor!
Sorry about your experience with calling us and not getting through, as we replied to Gemstone, there are times when we are unable to pick up the phone (at the busiest hours). Sorry that you called dozens of times, we cant seem to understand why you couldn't get through, many people make reservations successfully.
In regards to being complacent, we do not agree with you, we work very hard, put a lot of hours in, thought, effort and love into our restaurant.
Kind regards,
The team at La Paletta
-
We have been going to La Paletta since it first opened on a regular basis ,that's three years ago, never have we been treated less than courteously more often spoiled. If you had a bad experience which you obviously did, give them another try ,I,m sure you will be pleasantly surprised.
-
Camley GA thank you for the reply to my earlier post, i think that we wont agree on our views of customer service, from what i see when dining at your restaurant you are always busy so the phone will never be answered, i just dont understand advertising a reservation number then not answering it. I also dont see the relevance of working hard and long hours, complacency is a separate matter.
-
Well said ... la palette .

We have dined there often over the last few years and personally we have never had any issues with booking or service.
-
Well said la palletta, well said what? Looking at the replies to 2 of there customers the management aren't reflecting on the feedback but clearly saying that they're customers are wrong. Whilst i dont agree that the customer is always right, i do think you need to take it on the chin.

Nothing wrong with discussion and polite criticism is there? Is that not the purpose of a forum or am I missing something?
-
Sadly Stan some people just dont quite understand how forums work, they are a collective of persons opinions. So many people myself included have gained valuable insight into services and restaurants over the last decade. Some businesses have boomed on recommendations others have gone to the wall. The mere fact that this restaurant responded shows they understand the power of reviews. Hopefully despite there responces they may reflect on this feedback. Next time we dine there i will test there reservation line at a non busy time whilst sat in the restaurant, hopefully i will be proved wrong.
As for newbie posters who join with a vested interest to berate other members i suggest you play elsewhere.

I wodered whether our old Belgian friend had resurfaced again.
Bert
-
Our Belgian friend's English was better than that :-)
I have had many good meals at La Paletta but I've always booked a table in person due to problems with trying to book on the phone.
-
You are all, obviously, entitled and encouraged to voice your own opinions on our Forum and that is how it should be. For members who remember the old "Plaza" Forum, I have to tell you that the days of "our old Belgian friend" are long gone and will never return. Please enjoy this Forum for what it really is.

Just referring back to llamedos briefly where they said re la piedra, they had also been given the table next to the toilets, did u mean la paletta as discussed earlier as there are no tables next to the toilets in la piedra, the toilets there are in the bar area and not in the restaurant area.
-
Anyone know what happened to our Belgian friend?
-
he ran off with Suzie !
-
Just to add another ten Pennyworth _. We have eaten many times at La Paletta.
They have always been welcoming, attentive, friendly & courteous. The food has always been excellent & able to suit two very different tastes. We certainly don't ever feel we have paid a fortune , & we appreciate the difficulties in trying to manage bookings.
To ALL the staff there, we would like to say:-
Keep on doing what you're doing!!!!
-
yes mike 3 cheers for rachael....from mister chimmy chips

Can i just reiterate that my comments related to the service at La Palleta, specifically that they advertise a phone number to make reservations yet they rarely answer because as they agree "theyre far too busy". My other moan is in all the times weve dined there we are seated by the entrance door or the toilet neither of which are ideal locations for a meal and it appears that some customers are given the better tables with hugs and kisses of returning friends. In my view all customers should be treated fairly.
-
Maybe you dont give the impression of being very huggable Victor

I've got to say I hate it when the staff in restaurants go overboard with their welcome, Gran Mundo is a prime example, I'm a customer not a long lost friend!!
On saying that on restaurants we frequent a lot it is good to hear "do you want your usual table near the window" or words to that effect.
If I operated a restaurant would I treat all customers fairly, of course I would....but would I go the extra mile to keep my best customers happy, of course I would.
It's the old 80 20 rule, 80% of your turnover will come from 20% of your customers, you'd be daft not to go the extra mile for that 20% of your clients
I've always booked La Paletta by messenger on Facebook and I've always received a prompt reply.

Have to say that this did happen to me, used the FB page from NI to request a booking for 5 of us but when there was no response after 3 days I asked our friends in GA to follow up for us, they called in and the FB message had not been seen, booking was then made on the spot. I do think that if a restaurant - any restaurant - offers any form of online or phone booking system then it really has to be monitored and followed up on, otherwise there is the very real danger that potential customers will give up and go elsewhere. It doesn't take much, an answering machine on the phone line, and an hour or so in the morning to go through and respond to all calls/messages/emails, whatever, no need to answer the phone during busy times therefore no problem and everyone should be happy.
-
The 80/20 model is well known, i assume the evening we booked a certain table which was available, as we were the only booking so far on that date that we were a 80%, annoyingly someone who was clearly a 20% was given our table and we sat next to the karzi, the waitress gave some flannely reason but clearly they were part of the 20% club. As previously stated i feel there nod and a wink booking system needs a rethink, and what a brilliant idea an answering machine where you leave your message or contact number, that would be progress, incidentally we gave up with there facebook page for the same reason just never got a reply. Maybe im not one of there friends.
-
There you go, 19 minutes to receive a reply.....and I'm definitely not in the 20% club.

Personally I like to go to the butchers in El Altet, but myself a chuleton, and cook it up with some mushrooms and a cold beer. Then I eat it whilst reading this thread. Sometimes I buy the frozen lamb-shanks from Iceland and pretend I'm eating in a Gran Alacant restaurant for variety.

No chance......mepossem was at least semi literate!

haha no not me, no relation! But honestly, and (very) regrettably, I think the standard of catering in GA is very low when compared to Santa Pola, and certainly Alicante. I really wish it would improve, but honestly I don't think the clientele here expect very much. Plus it's probably very hard here in GA to get the numbers required, so for profits sake standards decline I suppose.
That said I have still not been to Mayka's kitchen, which I have only heard good things about. Plus of course the (many) Chinese's all serve respectably similar Chinese food, when I fancy a Chinese.
-
I have never actually found a "proper" Chinese restuarant, has anybody else ?

Perhaps one has to dress for dinner. In GA, of course, that would mean T shirt and sandals instead of vest and flip-flops. ;)
-
Or at the very least socks with your sandals preferably grey calf length.
-
Angie I'll second all 3 of your recommendations, Rogers is serving very good breakfasts, Mr Glaros deserves to be busier as he's a great guy and serves very nice Spanish food, and lastly but not least Get Fresh upstairs in the centre, i believe unlike most other restaurants in GA that they have a chef as opposed to someone who can cook, they serve up some excellent international dishes, the special menu is very good value.
-
The new Chinese does 3 menu del dai €7+ 8+ and 10+ they have a menu board just outside
