Who will give you 1.18? Best exchange rate I can find in UK is around 1.14 for £500+

Check Transferwise Tony, I've just checked what their offer is, see below
I sent a grand a couple of days ago, did the transaction on my phone with their app at 10.30am, it was in the Spanish account by 4.00pm
Great company

Also use Transferwise, after a recommendation on this forum, and am very pleased with their swift service. Jen

Hi,

Looking at transferwise app, do they just debit your bank account if you give debit card details? Do you know how big a company they are?
Title: Re: exchange rate
Post by: Andy L on November 25, 2016, 14:25.
I use TransferWise after recommendations on the forum, they take the money off your debit card or whatever you have registered with them to take the money from, have to say the rates are excellent and they are quick with the transfer.
I don't know how big a company they are.

Fairly big - look them up on Wikipedia. You can also look up Transferwise Limited on the Companies House website and learn a bit more. They are heavily capitalised but - up to March 15 anyway - have a negative P&L account; but because they apparently qualify as a small company they are filing abbreviated accounts which means there is no detail of income and expenditure.

Oh please does it matter how big transferwise are, ive been using them for years very pleased, if you want big go with the major banks who will keep spanking you with low rates and fees. Some people are never happy and find pointless faults.

I thought we were talking about obtaining cash, not inter-bank transfers.

Post by: BeachLife on November 27, 2016, 21:21.
Its been said before - but as for obtaining cash I use them because the transfer is so quick (less than 20 mins on a weekday) I do the transfer from Lloyds to my BBVA current account while having a refreshment at (for example) Dunbars or Websters and stroll to the BBVA cashpoint and its there its there !

Last time I did an inter-bank transfer to BBVA of Euros, when it arrived in the account BBVA charged me an arm and a leg. I've always fed it with cash since.

They also have a very good live chat option, where your untypical in query and they answer and continue until you are happy.

I have heard good reviews for Freemarket FX (https://freemarketfx.com/), they have a fixed commission of 0.2% and having just checked they have the best rate. Has anyone tried them?
That said there has been some articles in the news that the Referendum in Italy this weekend, if it goes against the PM, could impact the banks and therefore the Euro. So might be worth waiting a few days before transferring any money.

Freemarket do indeed show a good rate but have a minimum transaction size of £5,000 ( or currency equivalent) so may not suit everyone. They operate in a similar manner to Transferwise.

Took the advice and used transferwise on Monday and worked great with rate of 1.17 and funds in account Tuesday.

I had to pay an Ozzie Co for some car hire/hotel bookings etc.  Mushte. They gave me their bank details and I transferred through Transferwise. Took 2 days.

John i wouldn't wait that long, i also did a transfer last week i reckon about 90 seconds before phones were pinging to show money had landed. How did the banks get away with taking days to move money only a couple of years ago and charging up to £20 for the pleasure and a poor exchange rate to boot, absolutely criminal but nothing we dont already know about the banking sector.

Tony your theoretical loss is someone else's gain, in an ideal world when i bought years ago the rate was nearly 1.50 if i sell i hope the rate to be 1 for 1, but in all fairness a constant rate of 1.25 would suit most people i think.

Spot on Victor - a good middle ground number that most would settle on
