Title: Cockroaches
Post by: NickiH on May 21, 2016, 20:05.
We have an apartment on Altomar 2 and have heard there is a major problem in that area with an infestation of cockroaches. I know particularly this time of year you see the odd one or two. We are out next week and I hate the horrid things. Has anyone in the area got a particular problem and if so how are you keeping them at bay !  I expect if it's a major problem the community would send a pest controller out. It's weird only the last two years have I seen any around the apartment

We've not had any problems for years , might see the  odd one but they are normally dead , not much to eat in our place ...

Currently gripping my office desktop tightly before saying that we have not seen one in our apartment as yet, coming up on ten years owning it now.

We haven't heard of a problem Nicki. The Administrators usually carry out pest control each year and it is has never been an issue.

You are lucky, we are on 3.2G Monte Y Mar and we personally do not have a problem but we see many on the streets near to us. A neighbour had a major problem a few years ago, finding them dead in the house and can honestly say that they cleaned up and never left a scrap out when they left the property. Eventually they sorted the problem by blocking the drain in the ground floor shower room as this appeared to be the source.

Touch wood no problems this visit, last September I put a fine mesh round our ventilation chimney on our Solarium its an easy access for roaches.

Thanks for all your replies. I will rest assured there isn't a problem then ! But mesh on grills and patio drains in the summer months is a really good idea

Puerto Marino had a roach problem last year which dragged on for several months, there a bit like rats in london never far away. But preventative action in the sewer system keeps them at bay, if untreated out they come at night and exploit any weakness in your house defences.

Anyone noticed more cockroaches around recently?
Does the rain bring them out?

Just hate them!

We have just come back last week following a few weeks in GA and did not see many compared to last year.
We put down traps in each room a couple of times a year and that seems to keep on top of them.

There is also a spray you can buy (Can't remember the name but it's got a black lid) this kills them instantly.

You will probably find at certain times of the year the administrators organise the flushing out of drains with insectercide  and they come out gasping into apartments

Why would the administrators come out gasping into apartments? ;) ;)

We were out in July and for the first time in 11 years we were inundated with them.  Complained to the Administrator who said the drains had been sprayed and they were coming out to die?  Pretty lively when they entered our property far from dying.  They were on the walls outside late at night which became a game of get as many of them as we could before they could enter.  Unfortunately like the boy with the finger in the hole in the dam - impossible task.

As I have said previously, we see them most nights when we are out & about so I am not surprised that some properties see more than others.

Living here as we do, every year we see the new paint markings on the manhole covers to show that they have been round spraying for the little blighters.

Our Alba has the common ventilation stack on the solarium to vent the kitchen and bathroom, its an excellent entry point for roaches, I have tied a very fine mesh round the vent louvres at the top of the stack, since then no roaches, we used to find the blighters on the worktop by the cooker hood, made me think it could be the vent stack was the problem.

On Puerto Marino we have again for the second year been plagued by roaches, our house is shut up for several months a year and on arrival in july located 5 of the things 3 long dead and 2 running around. Soon eradicated with none seen inside all month. The house is scrupulously clean with no food in cupboard. Every possible point of entry has been sealed with a good dose of spray on all doors and windows. For all residents on Puerto Marino who think there is no roach problem, i can assure them that when walking through the urb late at night many can be seen scrabbling around.

We've had our place on altomar 2 for a little over a year now and although when we took possession we did find some long departed ones under the fridge and washer when i moved them to clean, we have not had a single one since, flat is always left scrupulously clean as i am a bit of a fusspot that way and i really hope there are none at the moment as my daughters and families are out very soon and would run screeching from the apartment as theyve never seen one, weve only seen one or two in total on the streets at night since we got the place, so the part of altomar 2 we are in seems under control.
