To think we elect the people who commission services like this
http://www.roundtownnews.com/news/costa-blanca-north/55903/benidorm-sate-office-under-fire

In short Speaking to local media, Balagstegui said “the council are scandalously paying 4,500€ per month to a translator who speaks three languages, and is only available for work between 9am and 3pm at the office.”

Banco Santander are paying me 200 euros per hour plus VAT to translate their internal memos and presentations for top management from Spanish into English. 160 hours per month at 200 euros is ... 32.000 euros per month
Ok, It is always at very short notice, and not 160 hours per month they need me. But still. I have other clients to take care of as well   :-) and it includes stern confidentiality ...
Everything is relative in this life ... and no, I don t have to sit in an office but can do it on a computer anywhere in the world - this week-end off to Santiago de Compostela.
So your point, John, is ??????
That he is seriously underpaid? Don' t tell the newspaper - their "reporters" are paid on a commission basis of the adverts they pull in. So in fact they have to sell adverts, otherwise they are not paid anything.
I can understand their fury at someone making more money than they do ...

Forgot to mention John: did you spot the errors in English in the "newspaper" (aka rag)?

You do make us laugh, we're laughing that much the butler heard us from his quarters in the east wing
His visit came in useful, he lit my Bolivar Belicoso

nope ... Ryanair for once   :-) They are the only ones offering direct flights from Alicante ...
Walking the camino de Santiago is ok for the tourists - not really for me (lame excuse: my back; reality: would be bored to death).

Of course, after the millions John made on the stock exchange this year, his butler will carry him on his back  :-) all the way to Santiago ...

Actually, John reminds me of Istanbul.

See the attached photograph - the plaque for the monument for the battle where the Greeks fought (and won) against the Persians, some 2500 years ago.

Now if you read the plaque, on the place of the former hippodrome and next to the Hagia Sofia you cannot but ask the question: who put this garbage there?

Google translation?
Someone paid a pittance to do the translation?
Or John did write the English?

I can only say that - together with quite a few tourists - I was laughing my head off at the poor quality of the English translation. And the same "quality" is shown on all tourist posts in Istanbul. Now would it not be worth paying someone a reasonable fee to do a good translation?

How well blessed us lesser mortals are.  We have extremely high flying executives, earning vast amounts of money, but able to devote all this time to offering us their pearls of wisdom & pontifications on the world in general.  Do we plebs deserve all their time & attention?
Perhaps we could have a poll on this?

My post may have been "badly written", although I can't see where or how.
On the other hand, my expectations of a highly paid translator suggest that a knowledge of the nuances, as well as the grammar of the language he works in would be essential.
I cite, the adjective used & accepted to emphasise confidentiality is " STRICT" & not stern.
The reporters quoted would be paid "FOR" the adverts & not "OF" them.
Good job I'm not paying !!!!!!

Absolutely right ... no more slanging matches allowed on this forum which always seem to be stirred up by one particular member. I have removed some more posts .... THIS TOPIC IS NOW CLOSED !!
