I've booked mine next year with Monarch...unfortunately in the school holidays so if we need alternatives, they are going to be expensive.
Fingers crossed for staff and customers alike, they can turn things around

Hopefully you have paid with a credit card. Agree though a real shame for staff and customers alike, a good airline looks likely to bite the dust very shortly

Yes, luckily I did but I didn't know that they weren't protected when I booked. I just assumed they were.

They are protected via ATOL which they got extended by 1 day today so any flights booked up to today are covered

'Those who have bought Monarch flights as part of a package with an ATOL certificate have financial protection. But the majority of passengers have bought flight-only deals, for which consumer protection is much more complex and uncertain.'

So if you've bought flights only and are not part of a package holiday you could be in the ****

Your right B&W - the ATOL protection is for the package holiday part if the deal. Flights only you are one in a long list of creditors.
My thoughts are mainly with the 2500 people who have lost their jobs this morning. I was a gold vantage member with Monarch for years great staff and crews, a definite difference to Ryanair. Guess they couldn't compete with the ultra low cost model

Just to add - I am at BHX flying out for work - the Monarch impact is plan to see - looking up on the board, 8 planes cancelled with takeoff’s between 06:30 and 08:30. Its eerily quiet upstairs past security as you can imagine

Maybe Ryanair can employ some of their pilots.
Here's the official announcement

Flights are being snapped up quickly as people book with other airlines The flights I booked on Saturday in October for £89.56 are now £459.96 two days later.

just rebooked with Easyjet...luckily not too much more. I rang Amex with my claim and they had been inundated with calls since 4am.
Such a shame that another company has gone under.

What really annoys me with the travel industry and they all do it is the money up front situation even for flights, train journeys, holidays, car parking etc, you then have to fight to get all your money back. Most other things in life you pay for at the point of receiving the item or service. How many millions has monarch received for flights etc right up to the end of 2018 that has disappeared into the administration black hole.

I to was a Monarch Vantage member for about 10 years - always used them out of Manchester as although slightly more expensive that Ryanair or Easyjet they were a cut above them in service etc. They started to deteriorate around 2014 / 15 especially on flight delays so have to say I deserted them at that time.

Another casualty of militant Islam along with the unfortunate local employees in the tourist industries in Tunisia, Egypt and Turkey.

Spot in Dave - that's the big reason I think - all of the semi-long hall destinations dried up

Mytravelite, Bmibaby, Thompson’s out of Coventry......and now Monarch.
Some entrepreneur will be along shortly to plug the gap for a few years.
C’est la vie

I reckon O’Leary might have just solved his pilots shortage I’m sure most of the people will get picked up quickly by other airlines

It’ll take about 8 weeks for them to do the transition from A320’s to 737’s, so it wouldn’t resolve his short term problem

There is still plenty of choice from Manchester as both Norwegian and Vuelling started operations from there last summer. Another nail in Monarchs coffin perhaps, too much competition for not enough passengers.

Monarch CE is quoted as saying that in the past year they had carried 14% more passengers but lost £100m in revenue as they cut prices to attract customers.

On the plus side for Ryanair their share price is up 2.8% - it's an ill wind that doesn't favour someone as they say.

Absolutely devastated with the news.  In the past as John mentioned we travelled with Mytravelite, Bmibaby, Thompson’s from Coventry and now it is Monarch's fate. We always booked Monarch, never bothered to look at another airline because we were always satisfied with their service and price. No idea who we are going to use now but it will not be Ryanair!

I've used Monarch a couple of times over the years and always been impressed with them. They would have been my second choice after Easyjet.

Just a head's up of something I have heard and can't substantiate, that Norwegian Airlines are also on the brink, neither them or Monarch were expected to survive the winter - from an airline industry source.

I also read somewhere that Air Berlin had gone bump
Title: Re: Monarch

Air Berlin and Alitalia were always deemed to be dodgy and were frequently mentioned in the same sentence as Monarch by the BBC on Monday.

Off the BBC News Website.
Air Berlin, Germany's second-largest carrier, has filed for insolvency, after its main shareholder Etihad declared it would not be providing further financial support.
The airline, which has accumulated debt for almost a decade, reported a record loss of 782m euros (£713m) in 2016.
Flights will continue to operate thanks to a transitional loan of 150m euros from the German government.
