Such enthusiasm.

Anyone know where I can get some of this locally - or any real ale?

Good Morning Keith, although I’ve never looked I would have thought a good starting place would be the food hall or the gourmet section in El Corte Ingles, they have a hell of a range of products

There are two specialist beer shops in Alicante that I know of: http://beershooter.com/en/ and http://www.habemusbirra.com/es/

Thanks for the information John and gaveteran.

I will seek them out at the end of the month when we return to Spain.

We have just been to Alicante to check the outlets.

Shooters was a tiny shop just along a street next to the Central Market.  It is a franchise.  The offerings were mostly expensive small bottles of German and Belgian beer.  The only English beer was Spitfire.  In my view not worth bottling.

The other outlet was down from the market and past the Principal Theatre towards the port.  The owner was very friendly but there were no English beers - some Spanish and Belgian. Unfortunately he is closing down this week because of lack of demand so his stock had been run down.

We didn't look in El Corte Ingles.  They have done some alterations since we were there and seem to have gone even more up-market and expensive.

The good thing about the visit was that we found lots of interesting restaurants/cafes near the theatre.  We would never have found them if not on a beer hunt.

Bad luck on the real ale front Keith, did you have any better luck finding a coffee you liked?
